The living room can tell your secrets

“You have been to Afghanistan,” said Sherlock Holmes to John Watson when they first met each other in the laboratory.

“How could you know that?” asked Watson.

Actually, Holmes inferred that the place Watson had been to was the tropics from the clear contrast of dark and light skin color on his wrists, and then further concluded that it was Afghanistan from Watson’s injured shoulder and the standing posture typical of a soldier.

We could better understand others with a sharp eye for details about the person himself or his belongings. Personal belongings, especially personal space, can tell a lot about a person inadvertently. We can know more about a person from his personal space, such as the living room, for people always leave clues about their character consciously or subconsciously.

Imagine that you walk into a strange living room. How will you observe it? And from what perspective do you observe it to better tell the character of the host?

You can judge the level of the owner's sense of responsibility and sense of time by observing how neat and orderly the room is. You can tell whether the owner is hospitable and voluble through the items on the tea table or through the space which is specially designed for visitors. You can further judge the character of the host by looking for the items which are eye-catching, plentiful or unusual.

Now I will show you a photo and let’s see it together.

We can make a quick judgment that the most striking item in this living room are those cloth gourds in different sizes with different designs and colors. Some are even waist-high. Though we're not psychologists or specially trained and we don't know the person who live here, we still can make the conclusion that the owner loves gourds very much because people tend to place items in the living room that can make them feel relaxed and give them the sense of belonging. However, we also have to be clear that a single object is often misleading because it is too uncertain and can represent too many things. These soft cloth gourds could also indicate that the host is gentle, or that some small children often visit his house, or that these gourds are some memorable gifts he has received. This is a multiple-choice question, and we need to find more evidence and see it from a divergent perspective instead of just focusing on one single object.

Let’s keep looking at this photo. You may think that this is a comfortable living room and the host makes people feel relaxed and close because you notice that the two people on either side of the photo are laughing with great delight, each holding a big gourd. They are Mr. Ying Yanlu and Mr. Wang Qianxiu. The overflowing joy is naturally related to the approachable host. And at that time they were tipsy, and so more lively than usual.

You can also find on the tea table three Lusheng (in the shape of an ocarina with a long handle growing out of one head) and even two real gourds on the floor. Now you can be pretty sure that this person not only loves gourds, but is doing research about gourds.
